The Definitive 2024 Guide to Apple Watch Bands: Comprehensive Insights into Sizing, Styles, and Beyond

When Apple introduced the Apple Watch in 2015, one of its most ingenious features was the user-friendly band-changing system. Unlike traditional watches that often require delicate handling with spring bars, the Apple Watch allows users to effortlessly swap bands in a matter of seconds. This convenience enables users to match their watch bands to their mood, activity, or outfit with ease. Whether opting for a waterproof band during swimming sessions or a more sophisticated one for a night out, the Apple Watch's quick-change system enhances versatility.

Since its debut, Apple has unveiled over 700 bands in a variety of styles. Navigate through the extensive world of Apple Watch bands with our comprehensive guide, covering all the latest options available.

Apple Watch band compatibility

Over the years, Apple has refined the size options for the Apple Watch. The initial models, up to Series 3, featured 38mm and 42mm case sizes. Subsequent Series 4, 5, 6, and SE models introduced 40mm and 44mm options. The latest Series 7 and 8 watches boast 41mm and 45mm sizes, while the Apple Watch Ultra stands at 49mm.

According to Apple, most bands are compatible with any Apple Watch Series 3 or newer case of the corresponding size. For instance, a 41mm band is suitable for a 40mm or 42mm watch, while a 45mm band fits 42mm, 44mm, and 49mm models.

Apple Watch band materials

As of Jan 2024, Apple's band offerings are categorized into three materials: rubber, textile, and stainless steel. Notably, with the launch of the Apple Watch Series 9, the company has discontinued the sale of leather bands, both from their own collection and those crafted by Hermès. It's worth mentioning that Apple formerly did not explicitly use the terms 'rubber' or 'textile,' and these descriptors only appear when selecting a band during the watch ordering process. Additionally, on the Apple Watch bands page, the option to filter bands by material is no longer available.

Furthermore, Apple has taken a step towards sustainability by introducing carbon-neutral bands, which include the Sport Loop, Alpine Loop, and Trail Loop.

Sport Band

The Sport Band stands as the quintessential Apple Watch band, serving as the default choice for many users. Among the first bands introduced by Apple, it has undergone over 130 iterations in an extensive color palette, surpassing all other bands in variety. Crafted from the comfortable and durable fluoroelastomer material, the Sport Band remains resilient, does not cling to the skin during sweat-inducing activities, and proves ideal for workouts, swimming, and dancing.

Priced at $49, the Sport Band's affordability makes it tempting to acquire multiple bands, allowing users to express their style with vibrant colors for casual occasions and choose a more subdued band for formal attire. Like most Apple Watch bands, the color range evolves over time, with new collections debuting in the spring and fall of each year.

For added flexibility, the Sport Loop is available in two sizes for each watch size (41mm and 45mm), catering to both S/M and M/L preferences.

Solo Loop

In the fall of 2020, Apple unveiled the innovative Solo Loop for the Apple Watch, offering two distinct versions: the $49 Solo Loop made of "liquid silicone rubber" and the $99 Braided Solo Loop, crafted from "stretchable recycled yarn interwoven with silicone threads." These bands, designed as a single piece without a clasp, necessitate choosing the correct size for a snug fit on the wrist. Selecting a Solo Loop that is too tight can result in discomfort akin to wearing a rubber band.

Apple asserts that these bands exhibit stretchability during wear, accommodating easy removal and putting on. However, in practical experience, prolonged use of the Braided Solo Loop led to noticeable stretching, rendering it unwearable over time, while the standard Solo Loop maintained its original form.

For precise sizing, the 41mm models are available in sizes 1 to 9, and the 45mm models in sizes 1 to 12. Apple provides a printable sizing tool on their website, or customers can opt to have their wrist measured at an Apple Store for an accurate fit.

Sport Loop

Priced at $49, the Sport Loop is a feather-light nylon band featuring a hook and loop fastener for seamless adjustment. Boasting infinite adjustability, it is available in a diverse array of colors and patterns. While the Sport Loop excels in comfort, absorbing water, it may not be the optimal choice for swimming, requiring a thorough rinse after workouts. Renowned as the lightest Apple Watch band, its versatility makes it an excellent everyday accessory.

For a tailored fit, the 41mm models cater to wrists measuring 130mm to 200mm, while the 45mm model accommodates wrists ranging from 145mm to 220mm.

Nike Sport Band and Sport Loop

Since 2016, Apple has been offering Nike Sport Bands, complemented by Nike Sport Loops introduced in 2018. Distinguished by perforations, the Nike Sport Band mirrors the standard Sport Band, while the Nike Sport Loop features distinctive Nike branding. An eco-friendly update was implemented by Apple in September 2023, incorporating recycled materials into these bands, ensuring each one is uniquely crafted.

Priced at $49, both the Nike Sport Band and Nike Sport Loop are compatible with the same Apple Watch models and wrist sizes as their plain Apple counterparts. While Apple initially sold Nike-branded watches with exclusive faces and bands, the company now provides the bands separately, making the unique faces accessible for all Apple Watch models.

FineWoven bands

With the removal of leather bands from its product lineup, Apple introduced a revolutionary material known as FineWoven, featured in two distinct bands.

Priced at $99, the Magnetic Link is a two-piece magnetic band designed to effortlessly snap shut upon wearing the watch. While adjustable and comfortable, it carries a slightly heavier feel. This band is compatible with both 41mm and 45mm watches, offered in S/M and M/L sizes to cater to different wrist dimensions.

For $149, the Modern Buckle represents the FineWoven iteration of one of Apple's original bands, previously crafted from leather. Exclusively designed for smaller watch models (38mm, 40mm, and 41mm), it is available in three sizes accommodating wrists measuring 135mm to 150mm, 145mm to 165mm, and 160mm to 180mm. The Modern Buckle features slight adjustability with a pin and five holes under the buckle. To ensure the right size, prospective buyers are advised to visit an Apple Store for a personalized assessment before making a purchase.

Stainless steel bands

Among the original bands, the $99 Milanese Loop stands out as a sophisticated choice. This braided mesh band features a magnetic clasp, providing easy adjustability for wrists of various sizes—albeit with specific limits. The 41mm model accommodates wrists from 130mm to 180mm, while the 45mm model suits those measuring 150mm to 200mm. Offered in gold, silver, and graphite, the Milanese Loop exudes subtlety and class.

For those seeking a bold statement, the Link Bracelet takes the spotlight as Apple's largest and heaviest band. Priced at $349 (Silver) and $449 (Space Black), it also holds the title of the most expensive Apple Watch band. Precision machined and available for 38mm watches (135mm to 195mm wrists) and 42mm watches (150mm to 200mm), Apple offers a $45 set of five additional links for users with larger wrists. The Link Bracelet's innovative design allows for easy adjustments by adding or removing links, ensuring a perfect and comfortable fit.

Apple Watch Ultra bands

With the debut of the Apple Watch Ultra in the fall of 2022, Apple introduced three new bands tailored specifically for these models. Despite the Apple Watch Ultra featuring a 49mm case, these bands are compatible with both 44mm and 45mm watches.

Priced at $99, the Alpine Loop is a slightly stretchy band adorned with a titanium hook for secure closure. Remarkably lightweight and boasting a distinctive 'gear' aesthetic, it is available in small (130mm – 160mm), medium (145mm – 190mm), and large (165mm – 210mm) sizes. While there is some flexibility with the loops on the outer side of the band, it's recommended to verify the ideal size for a perfect fit.

The $99 Trail Loop, akin to the Sport Loop, features titanium lugs, an adjustable tab for ease of use, and is approximately 1mm wider. Slightly superior materials notwithstanding, this band, aside from matching Apple Watch Ultra lugs, offers similar advantages to its more affordable counterpart. Available in S/M (130mm – 180mm) and M/L (145mm – 200mm) sizes.

For aquatic enthusiasts, the $99 Ocean band, crafted with tubular elastomer, is designed to fit over a wetsuit, and a $49 extension is available for those needing extra length. While it may be bulkier for everyday wear, it proves exceptional for water sports.

Hermès bands

Apple proudly offers an exclusive collection of bands crafted by the renowned French luxury company, Hermès. This curated selection includes various knit, woven, and rubber models, all featuring stainless steel lugs and buckles for a touch of elegance. While these bands exude sophistication, they come with a luxury price tag ranging from $349 to $449. Despite Apple discontinuing the sale of Hermès leather bands, a diverse range of Hermès bands is still available for purchase.

In addition to individual bands, Apple presents Hermès Apple Watch models, which are standard Apple Watches adorned with a Hermès band. Investing in an Hermès watch not only provides you with a leather or nylon band of your choice but also includes an exclusive Hermès-branded sport band in black or Hermès orange. It's important to note that these special Hermès sport bands are not sold separately, offering a unique touch to your Apple Watch experience.
